The hub of change

There was a story in a Shanghai newspaper about a British expat who left behind her photography studio job in London, coming to Shanghai to document the transformation that the city is going thru. She calls China the hub of change, and that is so close to how I see this as well, but with a better expression… She said that while working in the London studio, she was not very stimulated as the job is pretty routine after a few months. At China, everything is so different to her, the challenge and the stimulation is helping her being more creative.

Although I’m not planning to make a living out of photography any time soon, in China or anywhere else, I do have the same feeling about lack of stimulation for having worked at home over the past two years. That was a great opportunity for me, but it’s time to move on to a new life. Now again, I got a great opportunity to work at China, I’m feeling pretty lucky about my life, so far…

There was a time where the first row of buildings of The Bund were the highest and greatest among Shanghai, and that was only 20 years ago... (2004)

I’m not the type who constantly looks for new opportunities like a businessman, thing just sort of happens in my life and I choose to accept or let it pass. As much as I enjoy photography today, I don’t wish to become a professional prographer yet (professional means making more than 50% of revenu from that activity). But if that opportunity ever shows up in my face in the future, I wish I could do half studio works and half photojournalism. I always feel great and heroic to be able to capture life and pass that over to other people, maybe to other generations and participate in making history. But before one can do that, one needs to acquire a great deal of wisdom. And that, my friend, is one of my reasons for leaving behind my confortable life at Montreal!
